Behind the Inspiration When Dymphna’s Christian mother died, her pagan father, the king, fell into mental illness and ordered Dymphna to marry him. Having taken a vow of virginity, she refused and was martyred. She is the patron saint of purity and those suffering nervous and mental afflictions, and her candle’s scents can help calm anxiety.
St. Dymphna’s feast day is May 15.
